ℹ️ Available on all plans.
KPIs track the health of your business as usual: The metrics that must stay healthy all year, such as revenue, NPS or churn. Use KPIs for what you want to keep healthy, and OKRs for what you want to change.
A KPI belongs to your company, to a team, or to one person. Company KPIs show how the whole company is doing, Team KPIs show the health of one team's work, and Individual KPIs track what one person is responsible for. They all work the same way, but different people can add them.
A KPI can be updated manually, from its aligned KPIs, or automatically through an integration. To see the KPIs of several teams side by side, use the Board view in Explore.
Turn on KPIs
ℹ️ This requires Superadmin rights.
If you can't add a KPI, a Superadmin needs to turn KPIs on for the whole account:
Go to Configure > Framework (1).
Under Select your goal types, turn on KPI (2).
Click Save (3).
Add a KPI
ℹ️ Adding a Company KPI requires Superadmin rights. Team KPIs can be added by members of that team, Admins and Superadmins.
Go to your company's page, the team's page or Home, and click + Add goal (1).
Select KPI (2).
In the Add new goal form:
Enter a Name (1).
Check the Team and choose the Lead (2). Select your company for a Company KPI or a team for a Team KPI. To make an Individual KPI, leave the Team empty.
Choose a Target type (3). See Targets.
Enter the Target value: The start value, the target, the unit (for example %, $ or pts) and the date (4).
Click Create (5). To finish it later, click Save as draft.
Optional fields in the same form:
Align to: The Strategic Pillar or KPI that this KPI supports.
How often will you update this goal?: Monthly by default. See Update frequency per goal.
Advanced options: Contributors, a Description, the Progress driver, Tags and Visibility (Private is available on Supreme).
💡 To draft KPIs with AI, select Draft with AI in the + Add goal menu. See AI Agent.
Set KPI targets
Open the KPI and enter the targets in the table under the Progress over time chart. You can set targets per week, month, quarter or year, and merge cells to set one target for a longer period. See Targets.
Align a KPI
Open the KPI.
In the Details panel, click Parent (1).
Select the Strategic Pillar or KPI that this KPI supports.
You can also align a KPI from its parent goal: In Explore's Map or Cascade view, click + Add sub-goal > Existing goal on the parent and search for the KPI.
Calculate progress from its aligned KPIs
A parent KPI can update itself from the KPIs aligned to it. For example, sum the regional revenue KPIs into a total revenue KPI, or average the satisfaction scores of several regions.
Open the parent KPI.
To add an aligned KPI, click + Add sub-goal > KPI under Aligned Goals.
In the Details panel, click the Progress driver (2) and select Aligned Goals.
Choose the Aggregation method: Sum values, Value average or Progress average.
Click Save.
Aligned KPIs count equally by default, and you can change their weighting in the same window. Every update to an aligned KPI updates the parent KPI, and the parent's Activity feed shows these updates. See Progress drivers for KPIs.
Reorder KPIs
KPIs show in the order you add them. To change the order, select Sort by > Manual and drag the KPIs into place.
Good to know
What's the difference between Company, Team and Individual KPIs?
A Company KPI belongs to your company and shows on your company's page. A Team KPI belongs to one team and shows on that team's page. An Individual KPI has no Team, only a Lead. Otherwise they work the same way.
Only Superadmins can add Company KPIs, and the KPI lead or a Superadmin can edit or delete them. Team KPIs can be added and edited by members of that team, the KPI lead, Contributors, Admins and Superadmins. Individual KPIs follow the same rights as Team KPIs. See Roles & rights.
Why can't I leave the Team empty?
Individual KPIs are only available when a Superadmin has turned on Individual goals. See Individual goals.
How many KPIs can I add?
There's no limit. Keep Company KPIs to the few high-level metrics that show how the company is doing, and break them down into Team KPIs aligned to them.
What are examples of KPIs?
Company KPIs: Revenue, Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR), EBITDA, gross profit margin, Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), churn, NPS and employee NPS.
Team KPIs: Cost per lead for the Marketing team, customer satisfaction score for the Customer Success team, or lead-to-customer conversion rate for the Sales team. Choose metrics that show whether the team's work is healthy.
