ℹ️ Available on all plans.
When a goal is done or no longer relevant, close, archive, or delete it. This works the same way for Objectives, Key Results, Initiatives, and KPIs.
Close a goal when you've finished working on it. Its progress still counts, and you record what you achieved and learned.
Archive a goal when you stop pursuing it. Its progress no longer counts, and you can note why.
Delete a goal only when it shouldn't exist at all, for example a duplicate. Deleting can't be undone.
Close a goal
Open the goal and click the kebab menu (1) at the top right.
Select Close (2).
In the Close Goal form:
Rate your execution from 1 to 5 stars (1).
Choose the Closing status (2): achieved, partially achieved, missed, postponed, or cancelled.
Answer the questions (3), such as Learnings and Next steps.
Keep Mark as Closed selected (4). To save your answers as a draft without closing the goal yet, clear it.
Click Save (5).
You can also close a goal by changing its Stage to Closed in the Cascade view.
Important
Once an Objective is closed, you can't update its Key Results and Initiatives. Reopen the Objective first.
You can close Key Results and Initiatives one by one, before you close their Objective.
To change the questions in the form, see Customize closing and archiving notes.
Edit a closing note or reopen a goal
A closed goal shows its closing note at the top of its page.
To change the note, click Edit Closing Note (1).
To make changes to the goal or its sub-goals, click Reopen (2) and confirm. The goal becomes active again and keeps its closing note.
Archive a goal
Open the goal and click the kebab menu (1) at the top right.
Select Archive (3).
Optionally, note why you're archiving the goal, and click Save.
Important
Archived goals don't count toward progress. You can't update them or align new goals to them.
To find archived goals, filter the Stage for Archived on Home, Explore, or a team's or user's page.
To restore an archived goal, open it, click the kebab menu, and select Reopen.
To change the note, click the kebab menu and select Edit archive note.
To change the questions in the form, see Customize closing and archiving notes.
Delete a goal
Deleting a goal removes it and its history for good. Deleting an Objective also deletes its Key Results and Initiatives. To keep a record of the goal, archive it instead.
Open the goal and click the kebab menu (1) at the top right.
Select Delete (4).
Type delete forever and confirm.
Customize closing and archiving notes
ℹ️ This requires Superadmin rights.
Go to Configure > Templates.
Open Closing notes (1) or Archiving notes.
Edit the questions (2) and choose which ones are Required (3).
To add a question, type it in Add a question (4).
Click Save (5). To go back to the default questions, click Reset to default.
Good to know
What's the difference between closing and archiving?
A closed goal is finished: its progress counts in reports and dashboards, and its closing note records the result. An archived goal is set aside: it no longer counts toward progress, and its archiving note records why.
Which closing status should I choose?
Achieved: You reached the outcome, for example the stretch (70%) or committed (100%) target.
Partially achieved: You made progress but didn't fully reach the outcome.
Missed: You didn't reach the outcome.
Postponed: The goal is delayed and will continue later.
Cancelled: You're no longer pursuing the goal.
What should I do with an OKR that isn't finished?
You can clone it, move it to the next timeframe, or keep it active. See How to handle OKRs that aren't finished.
