When you set the Progress driver for a goal to Aligned Goals, you can select an Aggregation method.
The options are:
Sum values
Values average
Progress average
Example
Imagine an Objective with 1 Key Result.
This Key Result is then broken down into 3 sub-Key Results:
A. Close $1 million in sales in Europe
B. Close $1 million in sales in North America
C. Close $1 million in sales in South America
$500K in sales has been closed in Europe:
- Value: $500K
- Progress: 50%
$1 million in sales has been closed in North America:
- Value: $1 million
- Progress: 100%
There's no update yet for South America:
- Value: Unknown
- Progress: 0%
Sum values
This option sums the values of all the aligned goals.
You would choose this option if you want the parent-Key Result to show the total sales closed.
In the example above, the parent-Key Result will have a value of $1.5 million:
$500K (Europe) + $1 million (North America) = $1.5 million
Values average
This option takes the average of the values of the aligned goals.
You would choose this option if you want the parent-Key Result to show the average sales per region.
In the example above, the parent-Key Result will have a value of $750K:
$500K (Europe)
$1 million (North America)
— (South America)
Important
If the Key Result for South America (which doesn't have an update / current value yet) were treated as $0, the parent-KR would show $500K — which incorrectly implies $0 reported in sales. No update means the value is unknown, not zero, so it is excluded from the values average.
Progress average
This option takes the average progress of all the aligned goals.
You would choose this option if you want the parent-Key Result to show the overall progress of its Key Results.
In the example above, the parent-Key Result will have a value of 50%:
50% (Europe)
100% (North America)
0% (South America)
