Progress drivers

Choose how the progress of KPIs, Key Results, Initiatives and Objectives is updated.

ℹ️ Available on all plans.

The progress driver decides how a goal's progress is updated. KPIs, Key Results and Initiatives can be updated manually, through an integration, or from their aligned goals. An Objective's progress is always calculated from its aligned goals.

Choose a progress driver

  1. Open the KPI, Key Result or Initiative.

  2. In the Details panel, click Progress driver.

  3. Select Manual (1), Integration (2) or Aligned Goals (3).

  4. Fill in the fields for that option and click Save.

You can also choose the Progress driver under Advanced options when you add a goal.

Update progress manually

Manual is the default progress driver: You update the goal yourself. Optionally, paste a link in Data source, for example to the report where you find the number. Perdoo shows this link when you update the goal.

Update progress with an integration

  1. Connect the integration under Personal settings > Integrations.

  2. Open the goal and click Progress driver in the Details panel.

  3. Select Integration and choose the integration.

  4. Fill in the fields for that integration and click Save. To update the value right away, click Save & Sync now.

Perdoo checks for changes once a day, between 12 and 1 AM CET. To update sooner, click Update on the goal to fetch the latest value. The Activity feed shows which updates came from an integration. For the available tools, see Integrations.

Calculate progress from aligned goals

A KPI, Key Result or Initiative can update itself from the goals aligned to it. For example, a total revenue KPI can add up the revenue KPIs of each region.

  1. Open the goal and click Progress driver in the Details panel.

  2. Select Aligned Goals.

  3. Choose the Aggregation method.

  4. Under Weighting, change the weight of an aligned goal if it should count more or less.

  5. Click Save.

Every update to an aligned goal updates the parent goal. If Automatically set statuses for goals is turned on, the parent's status updates too. The Activity feed shows which updates came from aligned goals.

Aggregation methods

Example: A Key Result has three aligned Key Results to close $1 million in sales in Europe, North America and South America. Europe is at $500K (50%), North America at $1 million (100%), and South America has no update yet.

  • Sum values: Adds up the values. The parent shows $1.5 million in total sales.

  • Value average: Averages the values of the aligned goals that have an update. The parent shows $750K. South America is left out, because no update means the value is unknown, not zero.

  • Progress average: Averages the progress of all aligned goals. The parent shows 50%: The average of 50%, 100% and 0%.

How an Objective's progress is calculated

An Objective's progress is always calculated from its aligned goals, so you can't update it manually. By default, each Key Result counts equally and Initiatives don't count. For example, if one Key Result is at 100% and two are at 0%, the Objective is at 33%. Negative progress counts as 0%.

To change what counts toward the Objective:

  1. Open the Objective.

  2. In the Details panel, click Aligned Goals.

  3. Select a weight for each goal. To include an Initiative or an aligned Objective, change its weight from 0x.

  4. Click Save.

The Weight column in the Cascade view shows the weight of each goal.

Good to know

When should an Objective's progress come from aligned Objectives?

  • When it's hard to capture a long-term Objective in measurable Key Results, so its success is the sum of its parts.

  • When the aligned Objectives break down the parent Objective, for example one per Sales team, so you don't have to repeat the Key Results.

  • When a Company Key Result only starts moving late in the year. Let aligned Objectives drive progress first, and switch to the Key Result later.

Why don't Initiatives count toward an Objective by default?

Key Results measure the results you want, and Initiatives are the work that should get you there. Finishing the work doesn't guarantee the result: Studying for a driving test doesn't mean you'll pass it. That's why Initiatives count 0x unless you change their weight.

Is progress the same as status?

No. Progress shows how far a goal is toward its target, and the status shows whether it's on track. See Goal statuses.
