By now, you’re probably familiar with OKRs. The Objective tells you where you want to be by the end of a given timeframe. Key Results give you feedback as to whether or not you're getting there. And then there are Initiatives – those projects or tasks you believe will help achieve your desired outcomes.

To achieve certain results, you need to take action – Key Results won't magically move, they need to be pushed. So Initiatives are hypotheses that are validated through Key Result progress.

Updating your Key Results and Initiatives weekly is perhaps one of the most important tasks of your OKR program. When they're up to date, you'll know if Initiatives are actually pushing progress on your Key Results, so you can make informed decisions to keep things moving forward.

Tips for updating Key Results and Initiatives

For Key Result updates, we recommend including a comment to explain why something has changed.

For Initiative updates, it can be helpful to follow this template (see image below for an example):

  • What were your accomplishments?

  • Do you have any blockers?

  • What are your priorities for next week?

When updating progress on your Initiatives, be sure to change the value and the status, to make it easy for your coworkers to identify what's on track, what needs attention, or what's off track.

Where to update Key Results and Initiatives in Perdoo

Check-ins are the best way to update all your goals at once. They save customers a full working day a year as you don’t have to make ad hoc updates to each goal. So, we’d definitely recommend updating your goals with Check-ins!

If you only want to make an update to one Result (Key Result or Initiative), follow these steps:

  1. Find the Result (KR or Init) you wish to update in Perdoo (e.g. in Goals, via My Profile, etc.)

  2. Click on the Update button on the right-hand side of the Result.

  3. Enter the new value, and check the status.

  4. Add a comment to explain what’s new.

  5. Click Save.

💡 Pro tip: if you want to backdate an update, expand the Advanced section. Here’s why you might want to do that.
