Sometimes goals take longer than a quarter but less than a year. The best practice is for teams to have quarterly goals. This reinforces agility and instills a sense of urgency.

Depending on the nature of the goal, there can be exceptions for certain teams or departments, of course. In these cases, you can create a 6-month or an annual cadence.

Otherwise, you can encourage your team to think in terms of the quarter(s) and what will be worked on and can be accomplished within that time. Often times, you can calibrate the scope down.
