What's the difference between a Key Result and an Initiative?

Check out this example to help explain the difference

Updated over a week ago

Objective: Get back in shape after the holidays

  • It answers the question, "Where do I want to go?"

  • This is your destination.

Key Result: Decrease body fat by 5%

  • It answers the question, "How do I know I'm getting there?"

  • Key Results are a set of metrics that measure your progress towards the Objective.

  • They are outcomes because decreasing your body fat is within your circle of influence, but you don't have full control over it.

Initiative: Run 5 miles every week

  • It answers the question, "What will I do to get there?"

  • Initiatives are the concrete tasks, actions, or projects that you do to help achieve your OKR.

  • They are outputs and hence you have full control over them such as running 5 miles everyday.
